From Olympic Team to Real Estate Excellence: Why Blake Russell is Your Monterey Peninsula Expert
Intro:
Nearly 25 years ago, Blake came to the Monterey Peninsula to train for the Olympics and never left. The beauty of this area, its active lifestyle, and its sense of community captured her heart. Today, as a full-time real estate professional and top producer, she brings the same dedication and drive that helped her make the 2008 Olympic marathon team to helping clients achieve their real estate goals.
Q&A Section
1. What makes the Monterey Peninsula such a desirable place to live, and how do you help clients find homes that fit their lifestyle?
The Monterey Peninsula offers a unique blend of natural beauty, coastal trails, and vibrant communities. For those who value health and wellness, it’s paradise. It is surprising to see how different some areas are even though only a few miles apart. Sometimes it’s easy when I meet clients that know exactly what they are looking for in a home, but more often or not it takes a deeper dive into exactly the lifestyle they are envisioning and seeing lots of homes to really fine tune what they value the most.
Recently, I worked with some first time home buyers. We had looked and found something that sort of worked, but at the end of the day they were not excited about purchasing the best of what we had seen. We decided to put our search on hold, and let them save a bit more money to buy in a town closer to both of their jobs. Their main goal was to have something a few minutes from work. About a year and half later, we were able to close on a home they both equally loved.
I enjoy really learning about my clients' wants and needs for a home and asking them questions to help them learn if they are not sure. It’s not uncommon to see tons of homes and for buyers to feel fatigue. I have had clients apologize for seeing something they can tell then don’t like right away. I always say, “Never apologize, all this is helping us really hone in on what YOU are looking for.”
2. What’s one insider tip you’d give to sellers who want to maximize their home’s value before listing?
Preparation is key. Just like training for the Olympics, success comes from planning and execution. Professional staging, high-quality photography, and small updates can make a big impact. I have a trusted team ready to make your home shine. Recently, I listed a home that had so much curb appeal. We had refinished the hardwood floors and spruced up the interior, but the front porch was really looking old and dirty. I made sure it had a fresh coat of paint and the fence had been power washed. We added a new mailbox and hanging plants really make it look fabulous and inviting. First impressions are important, and are not always expensive.
3. How do you make the buying or selling process stress-free for your clients in today’s competitive market?
My approach is rooted in discipline and organization, the same qualities that helped me succeed as an athlete. I handle the details so my clients can focus on their next chapter. From pricing and marketing to negotiation and closing, I provide clear communication and a roadmap for every step. I give weekly updates, and things to do, spreadsheets and timelines. Anything I can to make things easier, but most importantly, I am available and actively problem-solving any issues.
Sometimes sales are incredibly easy and everybody is happy- those are the dream. Other times, there is a lot more emotion. I believe almost all are able to be overcome with a good attitude and transparent communication at all times. I am very positive and strive to be direct and informative to my clients. I also work hard to have great relationships with my colleagues. Currently, I am in contract representing a buyer, and we needed to request a loan extension. It’s not ideal, but the loan turned out to be very complicated. Luckily, I have a wonderful colleague on the other side that is working with us to get to the finish line. At the end of the day, it’s about collaboration.
4. What trends are you seeing in the luxury real estate market right now, and how should buyers or sellers prepare?
Luxury buyers are prioritizing lifestyle features like outdoor spaces, home offices, and proximity to nature, wellness gyms and more. We are seeing buyers that are very informed and very selective. We are also seeing buyers walk away rather than feel they are over paying for a property.
Sellers should highlight these elements that buyers are looking for, but also be very cautious of over pricing their home. We are seeing these high “tester” prices fall flat and then the property sits for a longer period of time.
I can give market data for cities and specific neighborhoods to buyers and sellers. It’s important to see what is happening, so you do not over pay or over price your home.
5. What sets you apart from other agents on the Monterey Peninsula, and why do clients choose to work with you?
My Olympic journey taught me perseverance, attention to detail, and desire to strive for excellence-qualities I bring to every transaction. I spent 20 years racing professionally, and what I really loved was setting my yearly goals and Olympic cycle goals. Now, I get to help my clients make long range goals when it comes to retirement or their changing needs.
My competitors always commented on how calm and quiet I was off the track, but how intense I was when the gun went off. I think I bring that same energy to real estate. I’m here for my clients when they are ready, but once they tell me they are ready, I’m all in, focused, and invested in them.
I’m a full-time real estate professional, a top producer, and a local expert who knows this market inside and out. Clients choose me because I combine expertise with a personal commitment to making the process smooth and successful.
